Our Place: An All Addictions Teen Recovery Support Group

Youth Programs
Date: Tuesday, December 19, 2017 06:00 PM - 07:00 PM

Venue: Lakes Center for Youth & Families  |  City: Forest Lake, MN

Responding to the growing need for youth recovery support services, LC4YF is providing a safe, secure, and confidential place just for teens.

“OUR PLACE” provides an opportunity for teens to gain insight into the process of their own recovery and to practice their potential to live a life free of addiction.

Using a 12-step group approach, teens can share their experiences, strength, and hope in an atmosphere of acceptance and belonging.

The group is overseen by caring volunteers who are familiar with group facilitation, the 12 steps process, and have a passion to assist our youth in gaining freedom from the devastating consequences of  addiction.

Who can attend? Teens ages 13-19 who have a desire to remain abstinent from drugs, alcohol, and other addictive behaviors. The group is also inclusive of  teens who are struggling due to a loved one’s addiction.

Where is the group held? Lakes Center for Youth & Families, 20 Lake Street North, Suite 103 in Forest Lake

When? Every Tuesday from 6:00 pm – 7:00pm, youth are invited to stay afterwards.

What do youth need to bring? Nothing, the group is free of charge

Jelly’s Story

Recovery from chemical addiction is not easy and it takes a lot of work and effort to remain chemical free.  Here is one youth’s story that is a work in progress.  We do not know what the outcome will be because her story continues…

“Jelly” is our longest term active member of “Our Place.”  She’s been attending off and on for over two years.

When she first started attending her life was in chaos.  She had spiraled out of control with drinking and had been running away from home frequently.

She came to the meeting because she had been ordered to attend a sober high school and treatment program that needed to be followed up with 12 step meetings.

“When I first walked into ‘Our Place’ doors I was a mess but over time ‘Our Place’ and the people in it have helped me piece myself back together mentally , emotionally, and spiritually like a puzzle . They’ve showed me that I am not alone in my struggles and that I am worthy .”

“Jelly” has shown a lot of leadership in the meeting.  She helps organize sober events and even hosted one of the sober fire parties at her house.  She brings friends and invites others to the meeting and follows up with people on social media if they need reminders to attend.

It hasn’t been a smooth road in recovery for “Jelly.”  She recently had a relapse with meth that lasted four days.  However, she came back to the meeting and started working her program immediately.  Through tears she admitted to the group her relapse and apologized for letting everyone down.  She was met with hugs and encouragement.

“I love our dysfunctional family,” she said.

When asked what it is about this meeting that works well for her she said,

“Relationships.  It’s hard to explain but I feel like I can be ME at our meeting where I can’t at other 12 step meetings.  You all accept me for who I am.”

Recently “Jelly” has reintegrated back into public high school and is holding down a part time job as a server at a local restaurant.  She continues to come to the meeting and is already planning our next sober fire party at her house.
